Of course, both Chuck and I had to buy iMovie for the iPhone ($4.99). It’s fun and really easy to use and a deal at that price. It looks in your Camera Roll for video you shoot (or you can shoot the video on the fly) then you can edit it by giving the video a theme and soundtrack if you like. You can also do some simple cutting/edits as well. Once you’ve done all that and saved it, you can use the Flickr app to upload it to your Flickr account, or use the option in Camera Roll to upload the move to your YouTube account. Both work great, but if you upload the movie to Flickr it does some major compression generating a pretty low quality film. YouTube uploading generates a better outcome. Here’s the YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-CyUcGqvDk (with the vuvuzela button!), and here’s the Flickr movie: http://www.flickr.com/photos/osheas/4734621960/. You can see the difference. Keep in mind that the iPhone 4 can capture HD video, so that gives you some idea of Flickr’s compression.

More on battery life next. Oh, and the burning question we’ve all been asking: will it blend? Yes it will!

Our iPad arrived late on Saturday (its release day) and I was super excited to open the box. As always, Apple outdoes everybody in elegance of packaging (which just heightens the excitement level). Once out of the box, the iPad at first glance looks like a big ass iPhone or iPod touch. And when I turned it on, just like an iPhone it needed to be plugged into iTunes to activate. No big deal there. It came 70% charged so I could play with it right away. And once I started using it, the comparisons to the iPhone and iPod touch flew out the window.

The iPad is FAST. The accelerometer is almost too sensitive, it flips from vertical to horizontal that fast. Apps pop open instantly and web browsing is easy. I loaded several apps on it with the first sync (which took a while), but was most interested in iBooks (the free ebook reader app) on it to see how it works as a Kindle-like device. Verdict: it is by far the most glorious ebook reader that I’ve seen (and I’ve tried the Kindle, Nook and the Sony ebook reader). The fact that the screen is so bright means that you don’t need to carry around a little mighty bright light to attach to it so you can read at night. They’ve made page turning easy & intuitive – if you want to turn pages by tapping on the left (to move back a page) or to the right (to move forward a page) or just swipe, it all works. Pagination and illustrations look just like a real book (unlike the other ereaders) and are in full color. Wow! Kindle killer? You bet. But the potential of the tablet device as an ereader or universal schoolbook is pretty boundless, IMHO. And book pricing is on a par with the Kindle: prices range from $7 to $15. Apple coyly bundle a lovely illustrated version of Winnie the Pooh with the iBook app and I can see kids all over the world grabbing their parents’ iPads and happily flipping through the pages, taking to the new device like little ducks to water.

Digital photos look bee-u-tee-ful on the screen and as has been pointed out if it didn’t do anything else, the iPad could be a great digital frame. I also love the ABC Player, which lets you stream ABC programs to the iPad. Headphones make things sound great (just like an iPod) but the built-in speakers are surprisingly good, too. I hear the free Netflix app rocks as well, but we closed our Netflix account so can’t comment. But given the zippy streaming of the ABC Players, I’m sure it’s good.

Because it uses the iPhone operating system, when you are web browsing quite often mobile-savvy sites default to their mobile versions so you have to type in the actual URL of the big kid site to see the real deal. So far, the lack of Flash support hasn’t been a big deal at all. The keyboard is much easier to use than the iPhone’s as the keys are larger but Chuck griped that he couldn’t type with all fingers because it was too sensitive. Our friend Camille, on the other hand, had no trouble typing away using all digits. So I guess your mileage may vary on that. Pages has so far been the app where we’ve done the most typing, and Apple has done a great job of modifying the app for the iPad to take advantage of the touch screen. You transfer docs to and from the iPad to your computer via iTunes (though it would be great to see an ftp app for the iPad).

All in all, two big thumbs up. I hope there’s a Skype app soon – it seems like it would be a great device for that, although there is no camera . Battery life has been great – it’s still trucking on its first charge. Oh, and it does want a USB 2.0 port for syncing. $499 is a bit on the high end for an ereader, but given all the other stuff this thing does, it seems pretty fair. And if you’ve been holding out for an ebook reader, I’d say your wait has ended.

Final note: we decided NOT to take it to Europe. I had visions of myself sitting in a cafe along the Seine, sipping an espresso, browsing the web on my iPad. But this thing is truly eye-catching, and both of us think any thief worth their salt would jump at the chance to grab it so we’d end up spending way too much time worrying about it.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, yes it will blend.

I’ve already updated iTunes, accepted the new service agreement (yada yada yada), and downloaded several iPad apps (talk about being all dressed up with nowhere to go!). So far I’ve gotten: ABC Player (streaming ABC shows over wifi, yippee!), NPR for iPad (streaming NPR shows over wifi, yippee!), NYT Editors’ Choice (streaming… okay, you get the idea), pages (the only app I paid money for so I can actually do some semi-productive stuff), Shazam for iPad, Twitterrific for iPad, USA Today for iPad, and WebEx for iPad. I’m holding off on books until I understand how they work on the iPad. All of the apps show up in a new row in the updated Tunes:

Now I am deeply conflicted over what to be more excited about: that the iPad arrives on Saturday or that we leave for Paris, baby! on Wednesday. Oh, the lure of bright shiny objects! Be still, my beating heart…

Stephen Fry, one of the funniest guys around, has written a wonderful article for Time magazine about Apple, the iPad, and Steve Jobs. It’s a lovely, funny read. His description of going over to play with Douglas Adams is classic:

“Is he in?” I would pant excitedly. Douglas’ wife Jane would point with resigned amusement to the stairs, and I would hurl myself up them to swap files and play. We were like children with toy train sets. And that was part of the problem. It was such fun. Computing was not supposed to be fun. Douglas and I once spent two weeks redesigning our desktop icons and then asked Jane to judge the winner. She tactfully awarded us each first prize. We would have sulked for weeks otherwise.

Read the whole article here. I know people are still going to give me a hard time about my devotion to all things Apple, but reading this article I feel pretty okay being a fangirl. And I can’t WAIT to get my hands on my very own iPad this Saturday. BTW: if you are thinking about an iPad, here’s a good comparison of the versions from Gizmodo.

Reading about Douglas Adams reminded me what a wonderful writer he was, and how sad that he’s gone.

I’ve been anxiously waiting all week. Yesterday the big announcement came: at 5:30am (PST) Apple new iPad would go on sale (for pre-order, arrives by April 3). I was up by 5:20. Paced in front of the computer and at 5:29 sure enough the store opened with a shiny new iPad section. Placed the order (momentary high, fist pumped the air). Sat back and realized that I now have to wait until April 3 to actually get the thing. Fist lowered, shoulders sagged. Off to get coffee. The life of an Apple fangirl. Pathetic? You decide.

It’s been a solid week on the road for Chuck and me. We’ve been traveling since last Sunday, and got home late yesterday. We spent five days in Yuba City where Chuck was doing some training, then headed down to visit friends in Vacaville, then yesterday we went to San Francisco to check out MacWorld 2010. We drove home today by way of my aunt’s in Watsonville and I am now ready to not get in a car again for a month. Actually, we had a good time seeing everybody, and Chuck enjoyed the training gig. But let me vent about MacWorld 2010…

I have really enjoyed MacWorld over the years. I was there when they introduced the first iPod back in 2001, the Mac Mini and iPod shuffle in 2005, the first iPhone in 2007, and assorted other shiny objects. When Apple announced that they were pulling out and would have no presence at any more MacWorlds, we figured it didn’t bode well. Still we got free exhibit passes and San Francisco wasn’t too out of our way so we figured what the heck. We decided that Saturday Feb 13 would be the best day since they were having an iPad event – awesome!! A first look at an iPad for real!! Hahahahaha!! Surprise! There were no iPads. Instead they had foamboard cutouts with iPad faces glued on them. I am not kidding. And we didn’t even see those in person – by the time we left the overflow room, the foam core iPads (and the speakers who had them) were gone. Sheesh!

The exhibit hall itself was okay – mostly full of vendors with various iPhone add-ons. But a lot of our favorites: Canon, Nikon, Adobe were all no-shows as well. We spent about an hour roaming around, bought some new car chargers, and called it a day as there just wasn’t anything exciting in the hall at all. I have to say, based on this experience, this most likely was our last MacWorld. I guess you’d call it the end of an era. This photo is the closest I got to the iPad at MacWorld. Ooh ahh…not so much.

I viewed/read the Gizmodo liveblog of the Apple event this morning announcing the (ta-da!) iPad. Now that the wait is over (well, for the announcement, at least – you’ll have to wait 60 days for the device to start shipping), it’s oddly, well, if not disappointing then not quite as magical as Steve Jobs claimed, IMHO. The price point is pretty good (the base wifi-only model will sell for $499), but some critical stuff is missing, and in my case they may be deal-breakers (okay, who am I kidding? they’re not really deal-breakers, I’d LOVE to get one). The first and biggest lack: Flash. Hello, Apple? What’s up with that? I can live without it on the iPhone but on what is clearly supposed to be a better-than-a-netbook device, that’s just lame! The second big failing (and again, pretty standard on netbooks) is no webcam. That being said, it does look like an awesome web surfing device, size-wise:

It’s a little hard to justify buying one if you already have a MacBook and an iPhone or iPod touch (which I do). It’s especially hard if you’re thinking (as I am) of upgrading your iPhone to a newer model in the next six months to a year and need to budget. But if you currently have none of the above (you lucky so and so’s), go for it – it really looks like a cool device!

If I had to guess, I’d say the real immediate market for the iPad is higher education – this could totally change the way students have to deal with huge textbooks. Oh, and it may be the eventual death knell for the Kindle since the iPad is using the ePub standard). Now let’s see how Apple’s competitors deal with this new class of device.

My inner Apple fangirl is about to burst out and take control of my body for the next 12 hours or so in anticipation of the big announcement coming from Apple tomorrow. Will it be a tablet? Will it be under $500? Will it be able to walk on water (okay, probably not that…)? I haven’t been this jazzed since way back in aught 7 when they announced the iPhone.

Can it possibly live up to the hype? Will it solve the world’s problems, rebuild Haiti, bring peace to the Middle East? Okay, no it won’t. Still, Apple tablet!
