Mud run fun followed by oozing puss-filled goodness

I did my first mud run last Saturday. It was a filthy blast. A mud run, for the uninitiated, is an obstacle course run that always includes, you guessed it, mud pits. Yesterday’s was the the Irvine Lake Mud Run, a 3.8 mile course along the banks of Irvine Lake in Orange County. We [...]

On turning into a grumpy old fart (or maybe just remembering the good old days)

Since today was the 4th of July, Chuck and I headed up bright and early this morning to run the Pacific Palisades Will Rogers race. This was the 33rd year for the race, and I think five or six for me, and who know for Chuck. It’s advertised as a neighborhood run, but over [...]

El Prieto Handicap, 2010 Edition (the one about the fire)

Race Director Chuck

Chuck’s annual race, the El Prieto Handicap, happened this past Saturday. He’s been running this race (as in, he’s the race director and official handicapper) for nearly 20 years (this was year 17). The course varies from year to year: one year it’s uphill, the next downhill. It runs along [...]

Adventures in Paris (in which we run a marathon then have to walk afterwards)

Yesterday was the big day – the Paris Marathon. I’m relieved it’s over because now it feels like our trip can really begin. If only we could walk, it would be perfect (just kidding, sort of). We all finished and our virgin marathoner, Judy, posted the best time of all of us (not surprising [...]

Good advice

The “Run Like a Dog” Workout (including warmup and cooldown) from Mark Remy (of Runner’s World):

Walk 8 seconds. Trot 4 seconds. Stop. Sniff. Sprint 7 seconds. Freeze. Walk 5 seconds in any direction but forward. Stare 9 seconds. Lunge at squirrel. Double back, walk 3 seconds. Urinate. Repeat six times. Collapse on rug.

Getting ready for Paris, one aching body part after another

The Paris Marathon is only 17 days away (thank you, Paris Marathon website for the countdown clock that constantly reminds us). Just us and 38,998 other folks running through the streets of Paris. What’s awesome about the course (hello, LA Marathon organizers, take note!) – the course passes several Metro stops along the way [...]

Thank God It's Monday!

Today is Chuck’s birthday, and Saturday was our friend Valerie’s. So to celebrate, several if us went to the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes this past weekend. It’s located on the tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, where Marineland once stood (and where they filmed the TV series Sea Hunt). It’s an absolutely [...]

Firecracker 10K to wind up the weekend

Since Chuck wrote up the sprint triathlon we completed on Saturday, I’ll talk about the Firecracker 10K that we ran yesterday. It was a fabulous day – amazing after the deluge of the day before. Days like yesterday make it clear why people want to live in So Cal: the air was crystal clear, [...]

Super Sprint Tri

OK, let me start at the beginning.  Sine the end of last March I’ve been struggling to get back in shape.  Eileen decided I needed a carrot and a sprint triathlon would be just the thing…

When we found the Race On The Base – Triathlon we signed up. It was a reverse triathlon: [...]

Attack of the creeping crud, and reflections on training

I’ve been battling some weird illness for the past week or so and it has been getting in the way of my training for the Paris Marathon, which is now only about six weeks away. I thought I had come up with my own weird disease until I started talking to folks and realized [...]
