The Week in Review

Well, the week started out busily and ended the same way. Took my mind off my upcoming ankle surgery, sort of. We went to dinner on Tuesday at a cool place in Los Feliz called the Vermont Restaurant. Our friend Gerry was waiter for a night as part of a fund-raising deal by his neighborhood home owners association. We went with his wife Mary and got to hassle poor Gerry as he tried to be a good waiter. He actually did a great job (especially considering how we teased him!), and the food was wonderful! On Wednesday we went to a retirement dinner for a friend of ours who almost retired a while back but then got roped into working a few more months. Now he’s really, truly retired, and we’re pretty envious. Friday was a busy work day as we hosted WebFest, an annual event that showcases USC student websites. It amazes me how sophisticated these kids are! The web has become a tool to express ideas, rather than being the object of the project. And then to cap the week off, Chuck and I both received AARP membership cards. In his case, he’s old enough. In my case, I guess they heard how I was feeling and decided to send me a card.

Saturday we got a cat at the National Cat Protection Society in Newport Beach. It’s quite a place: you have to fill out an application and get interviewed before being considered a prospective adoptive parent. We passed, and after months of hemming and hawing, we found Pete. His actual name was Spot, but everyone there kept calling him Pete and we liked that name better than Spot, so that’s what we have decided to call him. Currently he’s resident under the spare bed (he’s still settling in). We forked over some bucks at Petsmart to help make him feel at home. He has quite the personality, and loves to be petted and admired. He has yet to meet the dog face to face, so that should be interesting.
