Whew! Good thing it’s a long weekend, as we need a day or two just to recover from yesterday! In anticipation of stuffing our faces later in the day, we started the day running in a local 5K turkey trot. We ran this race last year, and I had to walk the last part of it because my ankle hurt so much. This year, having the new bionic ankle, it felt great – I think I could have done the 10K version of the race! That was pretty grand, but ever better was Chuck, who only seven months ago had serious spinal surgery, completing the 5K in great form, two minutes faster than he’d planned! We both were pretty pumped, and got really cool t-shirts out of it. Then we headed home, showered and started to get ready for Thanksgiving. Our friend jack was holding a potluck and deep-frying a turkey, which was a new experience for all of us. We all spent a lot of time watching the turkey fry (it burbled in a huge container filled with peanut oil – four gallons of oil!!!). It cooked pretty fast, and when it came out, it was a thing of beauty! It tatsed yummy, but was not as moist as we’d been led toi believe, and it didn’t have any stuffing or herbs inside to lend it an extra aroma. (We learned you can actually inject the turkey with seasonings before deep-frying, which might be interesting.) It wasn’t at all greasy, which was surprising. We then spent the next several hours eating and chatting, and generally having a very nice evening. Chuck spent a fair amount of time trying convince Jack to buy his Canon S50, so he can then upgrade to the S70 (just like you can never be too rich or too thin, you can also never have too many megapixels – the S70 is a seven megapixel camera). Somewhere along the way, we volunteered to be the hosts of Christmas Eve dinner for all who care to come. We won’t be deep-frying a turkey, though – we’re going to try the turkey in a bag approach. We left feeling pleasantly full, and happy that we weren’t the ones who had to figure out what to do with four gallons of really hot leftover peanut oil.
Pictures of the day are here.
